Bungie has announced that Marathon’s Season 2 now has a release date. Season 2: NIGHTFALL will go live on June 2, with a full reveal of what is coming dropping the week of May 25.
Details on NIGHTFALL are still limited ahead of the full reveal, but Bungie has confirmed several features coming with the new season.
The Night Marsh zone is coming as a new playable map, alongside a new Runner shell and new weapons. We don’t really know what they are just yet, so it’s one to watch come May 25th.
Bungie has also confirmed a new system called The Cradle, which will allow players to customise their Runner shell stats, adding a layer of build crafting that has not existed in the game before. It had already teased this system prior, but its now going to talk about it in more detail.
Faction progression is speeding up, and several quality of life updates based on community feedback are included. Though they have not said just how much and what’s realistic to expect as players once again grind through the faction reps next season.
Before Season 2 arrives, Bungie is rolling out update 1.0.9 to close out Season 1 with a few meaningful changes.
Locked room keys will now be guaranteed to drop from Wardens for the remainder of the season, and map events including Intercept, Lockdown, Warden spawns, Convoy, and Anomaly are now guaranteed on every run. Key Templates are also being changed from Fragile to Compromised, addressing community feedback that losing a key on death was pushing players into overly passive playstyles. Deluxe keys will also now have a chance to drop from every wall safe looted, adding a new source of high value loot across all maps. It should drastically increase the chance for players to get better inventory items and have fun before the season comes to an end.
Rook has received a buff to Signal Mask, which now stays active for longer while sprinting and reduces the range at which AI detects footsteps while it is active. Adding to that extra Rook survivability against AI.
Cryo Archive will be available every day from May 21 through to the end of the season on June 2, with a free Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit sent to player mailboxes daily during that window. A special Cryo Archive Ranked mode will also run from May 24 to May 28, serving as the final ranked event of Season 1.
Season 2 brings the game’s first ever seasonal reset, and it is worth knowing what survives it. Cosmetics, weapon styles, titles, and emblems earned and redeemed in Season 1 all carry over. Codex challenge progress, faction access, LUX and SILK balances, and Rewards Pass progress are also retained.
What does not carry over includes Runner Level, Ranked Level, Faction Level and upgrades, credits, all items in your inventory and Vault, and any unclaimed gear or equipment reward packages.

Ranked rewards for Season 1 will be claimable in the Codex based on the highest rank reached, ranging from the Bronze Runner emblem at Bronze I through to the Expanse Repeater HPR style and Ascendant Survivor title at Pinnacle I. With Cryo Archive opening more or less every day, it’s time to seriously grind with all that extra loot you can get from safes and events and really push as high as you can to get the skin rewards available for the ranks. Each rank offers differnt weapon and shell skins, with the breakdown as follows:
There’s ranked titles too. But, if you fail to reach the rank you did in Season 1 while ending Season 2, you’ll lose the title.
Note that Marathon is much more like a classical Extraction game, where seasons will wipe for everyone. Unlike Arc Raiders optional wipes. It’s more akin to a PvP season in Bungie, considering how it wants to wipe ranks and grant rewards for how well you did.
It shall be rather interesting to see what Bungie announces with Marathon Season 2, considering eyes are still starting at SteamDB, alongside Sony expressing concern, yet good faith that Bungie can turn it around.
